So today’s Cover Tuesday will get us back on track, as my three (now, not necessarily consecutive) week Interesting/Not as Good/Better cover feature continues. This week, covers that don’t add anything to the original. That’s not to say these covers aren’t good, or that the artists are bad, they just don’t have that special extra something that makes a cover really worth listening to. When listening to these versions, I just find myself thinking I’d rather listen to the original.
The Clash – Louie Louie (Richard Berry cover) (Buy TC music)
The Clash definitely get the no-brains-bashing aspect of the original down pat, but only manage to sound like a drunk cover band.
Ben Folds – Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover) (Buy BF music)
While I like the addition of piano (what else could Ben Folds add, you may ask), it doesn’t really enhance the song at all.
Of Montreal – Know Your Onion (The Shins cover) (Buy OM music)
Sounds nearly identical to the original, maybe with a slightly faster tempo and a slightly (though not by much) higher voice.
Arctic Monkeys – You Know I’m No Good (Amy Winehouse cover) (Buy AM music)
No horns? Not interested. That may be harsh, but it’s true. Winehouse’s version packs such a punch, this version can’t help but come up sounding limp and weak.
