Max Roach, RIP (1924-2007)

Be sure to read an extensive obituary complete with pictures, videos and sound clips over at Drummerworld.

For me, growing up listening to jazz, I never really connected names with tunes. Years later those things fall into place, when you get an album by Charlie Parker or Roland Kirk and you find out that you can sing along with a tune right away, that it’s buried somewhere in your subconscious. Max Roach played on so many of those songs, from Charlie Parker to Miles Davis to his time with Clifford Brown. Here are a few tracks from his 1955 album with Clifford Brown, Study in Brown (Buy It). Enjoy.

  1. i found out he died from archie shepp at his concert on thursday night. very sad =(
i’m the same way, his songs are ingrained in me.

  2. Roach’s work with Clifford Brown alone would earn him a place in the hall of fame. He will never be forgotten.

  3. Yo Adam:

I’m ashamed to say I don’t own any of the Max Roach/Clifford Brown/Sonny Rollins hard bop stuff. Great to hear. Thanks for this.

    Max was a giant. rip
