Cover Tuesday, Pt. 21

Thought I’d try something a little different for this week’s edition of Cover Tuesday. But wait, don’t freak out quite yet. Instead of posting some outright covers, today we have a batch of songs that are halfway covers — that is, they use parts of other songs (the melody or the lyrics) and put their own things on top. It’s kind of a “part 2” to this entry I posted way back when, but enough of an excuse to put up some of my all-time favorite songs (especially the Richie Havens live at Woodstock). Enjoy:

The Clash – English Civil War (uses “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”) (Buy It)

Richie Havens – Freedom (uses “Motherless Child” by JW and JR Johnson) (Buy It)

Mos Def – Love (uses “I Know You Got Soul” by Eric B. and Rakim) (Buy It)

Cee-lo – Awful Thing (uses “Shama Lama Ding Dong” by Lloyd Williams) (Buy It)

[EDIT]: For more covers, head over to Moistworks to hear several versions of “Son of a Preacher Man.”
