It’s been a while since I bought a CD, and Elliott Smith’s New Moon (buy here) is a welcoming reintroduction to music. There is nothing that new about New Moon as a bulk of the songs naturally fit with his previous albums and the rest are widely available from live shows. Of course, what New Moon offers is a clearer-sounding version of Elliott’s unreleased music. The recording of “New Monkey” is actually audible (unlike the live version floating around) and “Thirteen” (Big Star cover) sounds perfect.
Being Elliott Smith, the album will not be happy (depending on how you take it), but it is comforting to hear “new” music from Elliott Smith. Few songs use anything beyond his voice and guitar, and the album plays much like one of his live shows without the swearing and stopping in the middle of songs. More Elliott Smith music is on the way as an unheard, unreleased song will be on the next (Volume Two) “Live from Nowhere Near You” compilation. Enjoy these songs until then.
