Cover Tuesday, Part 5

This week’s Cover Tuesday features the music of Richie Havens, who I saw perform at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last Friday night. Let me tell you, if you ever have the opportunity to see Richie Havens live, jump on it. Jump on it and pin it to the ground and don’t let it up for anything. The concert was electric, with Havens’ powerful baritone and completely disarming stage presence, joking with the audience, telling stories and self-deprecatingly apologizing for tuning up between songs. Admittedly I didn’t have too much prior knowledge of Havens’ music, except for his Greatest Hits album Resume (Buy It) and his Woodstock performance, but that didn’t really matter seeing him live. With the addition of incredible solo guitarist Walter Parks and the very glittery cellist Stephanie Winters, the concert was easily one of the best I’ve been to in a long time.

Richie Havens – Drown In My Own Tears (Ray Charles cover)

Richie Havens – God Bless the Child (Billie Holiday cover)

Richie Havens – Just Like a Woman (Bob Dylan cover)

Richie Havens – Rocky Raccoon (Beatles cover)

Richie Havens – What About Me? (Quicksilver Messenger Service cover)

[EDIT]: Also, be sure to check out Aretha’s version of the classic “My Way” over at the always inspirational Souled On.

  1. My dad swears by Richie Havens. He’s an absolute idiot about music, but he always talks about how great Richie Havens is and I believe his first concert was of Richie Havens.

  2. Can we go back in time and can you take me to that concert? For real. Richie Havens is basically awesome.

  3. Adam—Thanks. I’m a pretty big fan of Richie Havens, too, so it’s kind of an honor to be mentioned in the same post.

Have to admit I’m a little jealous that you got to see him live, though…
