72 degrees in January … North Korea getting the bomb and Iran working on it … Pakistan’s President Musharraf as a guest on The Daily Show … the signs are all starting to stack up. I expect Newsweek and/or Time to be doing their annual “Are We In The End Times?” cover-story pretty soon, so I figured I’d beat them to it and post a playlist for the armageddon, the apocalypse, the reckoning, the rapture, the end of the world etc etc. Enjoy.
R.E.M. – It’s The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) (Buy It) The classic armageddon song. I have a friend who knows all the lyrics and tries to sing it every time he gets drunk. It usually doesn’t work out too well.
Fishbone – No Fear (Buy It) Though this sounds very early-90s in its production at certain parts of the song, Fishbone bring it with a more hopeful “end of the world” tune, letting you know that, “if you’re down for what’s right, for you there is no fear.” Elvis Costello – Waiting For The End of The World (Buy It) Costello doing his best Dylan (or maybe Springsteen) impression (just listen to the “Now he’d like to go to Spain or somewhere like thaaat” part). Bob Marley and The Wailers – This Train (Buy It) Marley’s early (before reggae made him a star) rendition of the traditional American tune about catching the train to glory.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – The End of The World (Buy It) I just got the AMAZING album Will The Circle Be Unbroken?, which includes this melancholy instrumental number. Bad Religion – Fuck Armageddon (This Is Hell) (Buy It) A more rabble-rousing song than the others. BR turns the judgment back on those doing the judging, and manages to use the word “denoument” in the process. Patton Oswalt – The Apocalypse (Buy It) The lighter side of the end times … Oswalt lets you know how to make the apocalypse work for you.
