Let’s Put On Costumes and Play Some Songs

Happy Halloween friends! To celebrate, here are some of my favorite covers:

Blind Melon – Candy Says (Velvet Underground)
Blind Melon turns Lou Reed’s sweet tribute to Warhol factory regular Candy Darling into a country rock classic. (Buy Blind Melon music)

Smashmouth – Why Can’t We Be Friends? (War)
Smashmouth wins for best costume: A Good Band (Ohhhhh snap) (Buy It)

Richie Havens – Here Comes the Sun (The Beatles)
Beautiful. Period. (Buy It)

The Jam – Move On Up (Curtis Mayfield)
Hip-hop heads may recognize this song as the sample in Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky” and (I think) Jay-Z’s “Encore.” But The Jam power through it like it was always a punk song. (Buy The Jam music)

Husker Du – Eight Miles High (The Byrds)
Singer Bob Mould sounds like he’s on the verge of self-immolation. (Buy It)

Mos Def – Kalifornia (2Pac – kinda)
This is sort of cheating, since it’s not technically a cover. But I doubt you’ll really care after hearing it. So good you’ll wonder how it ended up on a soundtrack for such a crappy movie.

The Shins – We Will Become Silhouettes (The Postal Service)
I’ll end with this one because it’s fun. It sounds like they’re just having a blast playing it. (Buy The Shins music)

Hope you enjoy the treats, kids.

  1. I’m usually pretty sensitive to covers, particularly Beatles covers, but I think Richie Havens and I can be friends. I dig the post.
